"Vermont Life" Editor-in-Chief to Speak at Commencement

Tom Slayton, editor-in-chief of Vermont Life magazine, will present the keynote address at the 76th Commencement Exercises at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vermont, Sunday, May 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Everett Mansion.
Slayton, who will speak about the importance of civic-minded leadership and the myriad ways in which people can serve, has been editor-in-chief of Vermont Life for 17 years. Known as the “insiders guide” to Vermont, Vermont Life has received over 80 national awards for excellence in editorial, printing, quality, and design as well as for its ancillary publications, books, and calendars.
Prior to his association with Vermont Life, Slayton was a reporter, arts writer, and editor for Vermont newspapers for 20 years and is past president of the International Regional Magazine Association. A regular commentator for Vermont Public Radio, Slayton is the author of Sabra Field, The Art of Place; The Beauty of Vermont; and Finding Vermont, An Informal Guide to Vermont’s Places and People, as well as numerous articles for national magazines and newspapers.
A graduate of the University of Vermont, Slayton lives in Montpelier with his wife, Elizabeth. Southern Vermont College President Barbara Sirvis will also award Slayton with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in recognition of his years of service to the Vermont community.
